Last week my FN 5-7 exploded causing serious damage to my left hand (I'm right handed). I had 6-8 deep cuts in my thumb and palm area which amputated my thumb and part of my palm. Surgery was needed to harvest tissue from my leg and fix the arm. Congratulations to me. The "explosion" occurs in the last round of the 30 round magazine with the factory 40gr v-max material. On this particular day, I only had three loaded magazines for the five-seven (70 rounds total), but had several other pistols to shoot after the five-seven. I start with a 20 round magazine with hand ammo, then a 20 round magazine with factory ammo, and finally a 30 round magazine with factory ammo. It was the last round of 5.7×28 and I completely ruined my day. … and there are more! ! Since purchasing the pistol new in February 2011, I have shot both factory reloads and manual reloads (600-700 rounds). There have been reports of Type 57s running out of battery (OOB), it seems here, but I'm not a weapons forensics expert. I am not new to shooting, handguns or reloading and have over 20 years of solid shooting and reloading experience. I was completely straight with FNH (aka Browning) so we'll wait and see how they respond now.

I have a lot of sympathy for Fairchase, but I think that may have caused Kaboom. I would never recommend reloading 5.7mm FN for a handgun. High pressure and necked pistol cartridges have a much smaller margin of error than older "boring" cartridges like the 9mm Luger. The FN 5.7×28mm has a maximum pressure of 50,040 psi, the 9mm Luger/Parabellum has a maximum pressure of 34,084 psi, and the .40 S&W has a maximum pressure of 35,000 psi.

A few things to keep in mind: Using reloaded ammunition in the PS90 and Five Seven rifles voids any warranty or any liability of FNH USA. By choosing to reload, you assume full responsibility. Because of its small shell capacity, start with the minimum listed and gradually increase in increments of 0.1 grain. Published load figures vary widely, so be conservative. min. and max. The loadings in the Western Powders manual are significantly higher than those listed in the new Lyman's filling handbook, 49th Edition, which I use. The 5.7×28 is very sensitive; Strict adherence to loading data and COL guidelines. Stick to flat bottom bullets and small rifle primers. If you use a smaller pistol primer, expect performance to drop. Expect excessive muzzle blast and flash from this cartridge. Both FN and Fiocchi manufacture ammunition with military-style standard primers. Stock residue must be removed from the primer bag before refilling. Beware the rolled 5.7×28. The 1:9" twist ratio of FNH USA rifles, when triggering a manual loader to load heavier rounds, I strongly recommend using rounds of 40 grains or less. High pressure can be a real safety issue with direct recoil PS90 and delayed recoil five-seven pistols. 5.7×28 Maximum Mean Pressure (MAP) is 50,040 psi.

Ruger-57™ Safety Bulletin Ruger has discovered that the correct safety lever on a limited number of Ruger-57 pistols may not meet our specifications and may crack. Although only a very small number of pistols appear to be affected, Ruger is committed to the safety and owners of Ruger-57 pistols should perform routine functional inspections of the safety lever to ensure it is working properly and record this change if necessary. Safety Bulletin PDF Ruger-57 pistols with serial numbers 642-26275 and up are not affected by this safety bulletin. Potentially affected pistols that are subject to this safety bulletin include any Ruger-57 pistol with serial number 642-26274 or less (including all Ruger-57 pistols with the "641" prefix). If your Ruger-57 falls within this range (641-00000 to 642-26274), you should follow the inspection procedure below to determine if your pistol needs modification. Ruger-57 pistols with serial numbers 642-26275 and higher are not affected by this safety bulletin. Problem Description In rare cases, the inner "leg" of the right side safety bar may crack or break off, rendering the manual safety device ineffective. If this condition exists, the manual safety device may appear to be working properly when it is not. Although Ruger advises owners of Ruger-57 pistols to perform an operation check before each use, we urge owners of all affected pistols to perform this safety check immediately. How to Check Your Handgun Before you begin, make sure your handgun is loaded and that your work area is free of live ammunition. Point the pistol in a safe direction, remove the magazine, and place the manual safety in the "fire" position. Retract the slider and lock it in the rear with the slider stop. Visually and physically inspect the chambers to ensure that there are no explosives. Retract the slide slightly and allow the slide to close in the empty chamber. Engage the manual safety by pushing the safety lever up (see Figure 1). Make sure it moves all the way and "clicks". Point the gun in a safe direction and squeeze the trigger firmly, but not harder than you would encounter resistance. The trigger must be blocked and the hammer must not be dropped (see Figure 2A). If the trigger jams and the hammer does not drop, no further action is necessary, but as part of your regular inspection process, you should follow up with all the functional checks described in your instruction manual.
