Fn Fnc Rifle - The AK 5 assault rifle is an excellent example of how the stock can be modified to suit the needs of a particular buyer, provided they buy enough of them. The AK 5 or Automatkarbin 5 ("automatic carbine 5", "automatic carbine" as the Swedish term for an assault rifle) was introduced in 1986 and still serves as the standard Swedish assault rifle. The current version is the AK 5C, which also accepts a Colt M203 grenade launcher attachment.

In the mid-1970s, the Swedish military began searching for a new assault rifle to replace its 7.62mm weapon. Swedish firearms experts studied all available designs and narrowed down the options to either the Israeli Galil or the Belgian FN FNC. Quantities of each were purchased and subjected to lengthy technical and military trials in 1979/80, and as a result the Galil was retired and the FN FNC was selected as capable of the further development required by Sweden.

Their main concern was to have weapons that could withstand the harsh northern climate; extreme cold places enormous stress on firearms, and handling weapons in cold conditions often requires adjustments. Further testing followed, with changes made to the prototype FN FNC design, until finally the Swedish Army was satisfied and in 1985 the Carl Gustav AK 5 was finally approved for adoption.

The FN FNC was adopted by the Belgian Armed Forces in 1989 as a service-wide replacement for the 7.62×51mm NATO FN FAL after being issued in small numbers to airborne infantry units for several years. It has been called one of the best rifles ever made.

Changing the original FNC does not affect the underlying mechanism; which remains the same type with a gas operated rotary screw. But the three-shot flash mechanism was removed, leaving only the option of single-shot or automatic fire at a rate of 650 rounds per minute.

The most noticeable change is the reinforcement parts such as the stock, bolt, extractor, hand guard, gas block, cocking handle, switch and swivel strap. The cocking handle and trigger are enlarged so that even a man wearing heavy gloves can easily operate them, and the forend is also enlarged for the same reason. Furthermore, the designers modified the detachable box magazine to be interchangeable with the magazine of the STANAG M16 rifle.

The sights are simple two-position flip-up with holes for ranges of 250 and 400 meters, and the front sight is covered to reduce recoil. Optical and electro-optic sights can of course be installed. The finish is for this type of weapon; the metal is first sandblasted, then parkerized, and finally a dark green layer of enamel is fired onto it.

Fn Five-seven Problems - On the Kifaru forums, "Fairchase" wrote that a round fired from his FN 5-7 detonated it, severely injuring his hand and thumb.

Last week my FN 5-7 exploded causing serious damage to my left hand (I'm right handed). I had 6-8 deep cuts in my thumb and palm area which amputated my thumb and part of my palm. Surgery was needed to harvest tissue from my leg and fix the arm. Congratulations to me. The "explosion" occurs in the last round of the 30 round magazine with the factory 40gr v-max material. On this particular day, I only had three loaded magazines for the five-seven (70 rounds total), but had several other pistols to shoot after the five-seven. I start with a 20 round magazine with hand ammo, then a 20 round magazine with factory ammo, and finally a 30 round magazine with factory ammo. It was the last round of 5.7×28 and I completely ruined my day. … and there are more! ! Since purchasing the pistol new in February 2011, I have shot both factory reloads and manual reloads (600-700 rounds). There have been reports of Type 57s running out of battery (OOB), it seems here, but I'm not a weapons forensics expert. I am not new to shooting, handguns or reloading and have over 20 years of solid shooting and reloading experience. I was completely straight with FNH (aka Browning) so we'll wait and see how they respond now.

I have a lot of sympathy for Fairchase, but I think that may have caused Kaboom. I would never recommend reloading 5.7mm FN for a handgun. High pressure and necked pistol cartridges have a much smaller margin of error than older "boring" cartridges like the 9mm Luger. The FN 5.7×28mm has a maximum pressure of 50,040 psi, the 9mm Luger/Parabellum has a maximum pressure of 34,084 psi, and the .40 S&W has a maximum pressure of 35,000 psi.

Shooting Times had an article about reloading the FN 5.7×28mm (it has since been deleted, probably for liability reasons). They list some caveats for potential reloaders…

A few things to keep in mind: Using reloaded ammunition in the PS90 and Five Seven rifles voids any warranty or any liability of FNH USA. By choosing to reload, you assume full responsibility. Because of its small shell capacity, start with the minimum listed and gradually increase in increments of 0.1 grain. Published load figures vary widely, so be conservative. min. and max. The loadings in the Western Powders manual are significantly higher than those listed in the new Lyman's filling handbook, 49th Edition, which I use. The 5.7×28 is very sensitive; Strict adherence to loading data and COL guidelines. Stick to flat bottom bullets and small rifle primers. If you use a smaller pistol primer, expect performance to drop. Expect excessive muzzle blast and flash from this cartridge. Both FN and Fiocchi manufacture ammunition with military-style standard primers. Stock residue must be removed from the primer bag before refilling. Beware the rolled 5.7×28. The 1:9" twist ratio of FNH USA rifles, when triggering a manual loader to load heavier rounds, I strongly recommend using rounds of 40 grains or less. High pressure can be a real safety issue with direct recoil PS90 and delayed recoil five-seven pistols. 5.7×28 Maximum Mean Pressure (MAP) is 50,040 psi.

Although only a very small number of pistols appear to be affected, Ruger is committed to the safety and owners of Ruger-57 pistols should perform routine functional inspections of the safety lever to ensure it is working properly and record this change if necessary. Point the pistol in a safe direction, remove the magazine, and place the manual safety in the "fire" position. Retract the slider and lock it in the rear with the slider stop. Visually and physically inspect the chambers to ensure that there are no explosives. Retract the slide slightly and allow the slide to close in the empty chamber. Engage the manual safety by pushing the safety lever up (see Figure 1). Make sure it moves all the way and "clicks". Point the gun in a safe direction and squeeze the trigger firmly, but not harder than you would encounter resistance. The trigger must be blocked and the hammer must not be dropped (see Figure 2A). If the trigger jams and the hammer does not drop, no further action is necessary, but as part of your regular inspection process, you should follow up with all the functional checks described in your instruction manual. Fn 509 Standard - This review is part 2 of 3 exploring the FN 509 guns, where I'll discuss the 509 Series offerings, starting with the 509 Medium, the FN 509 Standard, and the 509 Tactical. During testing, I subjected each pistol to the same round counts with the same ammunition, performing the same drills.

As mentioned in a previous review, to provide some context for the currently uninformed reader: FN firearms have long been widely used by the United States military, as well as other government agencies. In fact, if you've served in the Army or Marine Corps in the past few decades, chances are your issued firearm was an FN product. They have historically developed sophisticated and reliable firearms and continue to do so.

Fn 509 Standard

The specs for the FN 509 (like the FN, I'll call it the "509 Standard" to avoid any confusion with the FN 509 nomenclature) are listed below:

Those paying attention will notice that the 509 Standard and 509 Midsize have nearly identical features: the same barrel length, sight radius, trigger pull, and overall length. They also weigh about the same amount, just 0.4 oz. Separating the two and $649 share and same MSRP. The only significant difference between the two is grip size. Some may argue that they have different magazine capacities, which is somewhat true, but you can put a 509 Standard 17 round magazine in a 509 Medium and essentially eliminate the difference.

With more grip on the 509 standard, there is a slight difference in feel when pressing the magazine release or hitting the slide lock, but these differences are soon forgotten after sending a few rounds through the range. The FN 509 Standard, like the FN 509 Medium, is comfortable to hold "in the hand" and is similar to the 509 Medium. The 509 comes standard with interchangeable backstraps for a perfect fit.

After shooting both the 509 Standard and the 509 Medium, I find that I prefer the medium's lower grip. I found that I was able to get a firm grip on the gun and by pushing down on the magazine floor a bit with my fingers I was able to keep the stock high on the beaver tail. This made handling the recoil a little easier with the medium size. It's not a huge difference, but it's noticeable. But if I shoot with a medium 17-round magazine instead of the small 15-round magazine that comes standard, that difference disappears. So I guess you could call it a wash between the two.

Again, the trigger on the 509 Standard is the same as the 509 Medium; That is, it is somewhat lacking. To paraphrase some of my words from Part 1 of this series, I think the trigger will suit most people, but I'm a little curious. I honestly think that a little polish on the trigger components would almost eliminate my desire to go for an aftermarket option. It's not very light or smooth, nor does it have a super short reset. It makes it harder for me to shoot faster than say a CMC trigger on a highly modified Glock.

509 Standard and 509 Medium have the same sights, all other features on top of the frame. They give you your standard 3-dot system, with a slightly larger dot on the front sight for quick sighting. They also offer some shelving in the back for single-handed cycling. As I said before, I think the visuals are good. However, I would like to turn off the rear sights. It's easier for me to pick the front position and focus when I'm not distracted by 2 other similar spots.

I did the same walking backbore as the 509 standard and since the sights are the same, the sight radius is the same, the trigger is the same, and the barrel is the same, the walking backbore results are the same. I was able to return to 50 yards on a C-zone target with no problem.

As mentioned above, the 509 gives a slight edge to the standard medium grip, which is evident in faster cadence shooting. I did the same drills on all pistols and finished with a few repetitions of the bill drill. I like the medium size catch, which gave similar timing results to the standard bill drills series, although I felt it was lighter with the medium size.

To repeat from the previous review, I wanted to test the ease of use as well as the reliability of the system a bit. I loaded two of the 17 round magazines fully and fired one round, dropped the mag and chambered the other, then fired one round. I repeated this until both magazines were empty.

During this test, there were no failures due to the rough (but reasonable) treatment of the magazines. Both the pistol and the magazine functioned flawlessly. I should note that inserting a 17 round magazine into the magazine is a bit easier on the Standard than on the Medium.

There are too many similarities between the FN 509 Standard and Medium to tell which is better. Both are very good pistols and I would trust them with my life. However, I will say that I enjoyed the medium shot more than the standard and would go for the short option if given the choice.

Glock 20 Gen 3 - I bought a G20 a year ago from a Glock store and it's a great sidearm to use on my farm in Northwest Colorado. I have full confidence that he can handle any situation that may arise in this rural area. Winchester silver-tipped recoil and barrel jump are very manageable. For the big game hunter, this is a top-shelf sidearm.

I've heard it's the best weapon for those bear lures I've had in increasing numbers while fishing for trout last year.

I also bought a plastic plug for the grip socket near where the magazine is located. I heard that dirt can get into the shooting range there - but IDK for sure yet.

With a full magazine, make sure you press it firmly into the body of the gun - it's a shame the magazine falls out. Let's hope - the spring of the magazine will be a little weaker.

Have 20SF. My third Glock and my favorite of the 8 guns. 15 10mm rounds have more firepower.

I was in the area last week and fired 3 different bullets. BLAZER, SIG/SAUER AND ARMSCOR. All 3 were done without any problems. But I can say that I like ARMSCOR a lot.

I fired all FMJs with single fire and semi-auto. The weapon worked INSIDE! GLOCK of course!

I have an old G19 from the early 90's which is still a GREAT gun. I always wore this or my RUGER 1911 45ACP when I bought it.

I have 4 small guns but LOVE MORE POWER! BOSS, i.e. WOMAN likes small guns anyway. I never want to infuriate him enough to shoot me; you are a much better shooter than me! His father raised him in NRA tournaments in the late 50's and early 60's and won many trophies, always beating the young man! It must hurt!

I hesitate between 10mm vs. .45 ACP. However, after going through a lot of ballistics and performance studies, there is no doubt that ... the G20 wins in all aspects: muzzle and target speed and power, flight path etc personal protection but if that black bear shows up in my yard and might get some lead shampoo !

I've been balancing on the verge of getting one of these for a long time. I never thought of Glocks due to the plastic and lack of a manual safety. But one in .45acp fell into my lap and grew on me a lot - quality, ergos, simplicity and weight considerations. So this will be my first 10mm, based on my previous Glock experience... 15 rounds of 10mm should be enough for anything I encounter in the southern Rockies I call "home".

I have a second Glock 10mm and I'm delighted. Parcels bounce, but nothing "gets out of control". I'm not a big guy, but I just get out of the box and see a piece I like (no frills, just stock) and I hit the target every time. BIG WEAPONS!!!

I bought a G20 GEN 4 about a month ago. I bought it for a low price. Even if I paid more I would still be a HAPPY GLOCK GUY!

I went there last week and shot 3 different bullets. BLAZER, SIG/SAUER and ARMSCOR. All 3 can be handled without any problems. But I would say I like ARMSCOR the best.

I fired all the FMJs on single fire and semi auto. The gun works for FREE! Of course it's a GLOCK!

I have a small 4 carry gun but I like more power! BOSS, I.E. WIFE likes a little gun. I never wanted to anger him enough to kill me; he is a better shooter than me! His father raised him in NRA competition in the late 50's and early 60's and won many awards, always beating the man! That must hurt!

I'm torn between 10mm vs. .45 ACT. However, after reviewing many studies and performance, there is no doubt... the G20 wins in all areas: muzzle and target speed and performance, interactive competition flight, etc. Even though the ammo is a bit pricey I'm glad I got it mainly for self defense but if a black bear shows up in my yard he's gonna get shampooed!

I've been teetering on the edge of getting one of these for a while now. Don't think of Glocks because of the plastic and no manual safety. But one of the .45acp fell into my lap and grew on me a lot - quality, ergo, simplicity and light weight. So this will be my first 10mm, based on my experience with the Glock... 15 rounds of 10mm should be enough for anything I encounter in the Southern Rockies that I call "home".

I use my second glock 10mm and love it. It involves recoil, but nothing "uncontrollable". I'm not a big guy, but right out of the box I've found a little tweak to my liking (no extra gear, just supplies) and I've hit the spot every time. AWESOME!!!

This is my first gun and like your first love, it always depends on your preference. In Houston, it's shorts and a t-shirt for nine months of the year, and I usually carry its brother, the Glock 29. But when it's cold and I'm wearing a shirt, I still pack the G20. With 16 rounds of hollow point I think I can handle anything that can be presented. If Sasquatch has the bad judgment to show himself, G20 will make him regret it even more. Love this gun.

This gun is a complete package. It is strong but controlled. It has plenty of power and I would definitely use it for any household or large game (e.g. bears) protection. This is my fifth glock and I love them all.
